PE at Cotsford
This year in PE we have created a long term plan to ensure that all children experience a wide range of activities including; games, gymnastics, dance, athletics and Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA). Each year group has the appropriate core task to follow which is supplemented by planning ideas and resources from Get Set 4 PE. The Foundation of Light also works with each class during the year. All children have the opportunity to take part in competitions and festivals which are appropriate to their key stage.
Summer 2
What a half term it has been! Reception have had lots of fun practising for Sports Day. They also completed a Balance Bikes program delivered by Hartlepool Borough Council. They all had a really good try! As always, Reception love dancing in class and completed some very groovy moves.
Year 1 have also been busy practising various sports in preparation for Sports Day! The children practised a running relay, the javelin, skipping, football, egg and spoon race and the children’s favourite, the obstacle course. They worked hard on their throwing skills, improving their aim and force.
The children in Year 2 and 3 thoroughly enjoyed playing their new game, Kick Rounders. They can now organise the game themselves, follow the rules and keep score. They focussed on kicking correctly, using tactics and moving to intercept the ball.
Wow! Year 3 have had a great time playing rounders with the SAFC coaches, and cricket this half term. The skills needed to play each game are very similar so the children can now use different types of bowling, a range of bats and most importantly working as a team has been key to them succeeding and earning more points. As you can see in the pictures below, the children had to decide how far to run to earn more points, which often led to them being out and scoring zero. Oh no!
The children in Year 4 were lucky enough to work with Joey from SAFC Foundation of Light again this half term. This time, they practised important skills such as throwing, catching and sprinting.
Also, they started to explore the skills needed to play basketball. Well done Year 4! I can see some great catches.
Year 5 love PE and their passion is shown during their lessons. They have been really busy this half term; the children have practised their competitive athletic skills in preparation for sports day, learned new street games, which they have been playing outside of school and learned new cricket and rugby skills too.
The game, ‘Calling the Shots’ has helped Year 6 to improve their ball control skills. They have had lots of fun practising dribbling a ball with control and increasing speed. They can now attack and defend an area. Keep it up Year 6!
Health Week
Health Week was a huge success with the children this year and it was jam packed with a range of activities to help keep us fit and healthy. You can see some of the fabulous activities below:
- Sports Day with some very competitive children! The children giggled all the way through as well as pushing themselves to the limit trying to run the fastest, jump the highest and throw the javelin the furthest.
- They tasted some new healthy food with Sarah, the chef.
- There was a amazing stunt cycle show from. The children were shocked into silence when the cyclist was on the roof of his van.
- A dance lesson from a professional dancer.
- Cricket taster sessions from professional coaches.
- Crazy golf, a surf simulator and a range of inflatables.
- The children learnt some new games with Andrew, the Street Games coach.
- The Year 2/3 class have been tracking their activities on Get Set Tokyo and they were lucky enough to win a zoom call with the Olympic boxer, Anthony Ogogo. He told us his story, showed us some boxing moves and he was very impressed with our questions. You can track your activities too, https://www.getset.co.uk/
Summer 1
This half term, Reception we have completed gymnastics. They had lots of fun learning all the new moves and poses. As you can see in the pictures, their favourite was the ‘Rock and Roll’ into a pike.
Year 1, the children have loved OAA, which has developed their map skills and communication.
They also enjoyed learning different throwing techniques, using beanbags. They have developed defending skills, and put these to the test when playing games such as 10-point hoops.
The children in Year 2 and 3 absolutely loved the game, Piggy in the Middle. They even play it at break times! They enjoyed using tactics to trick people and they were happy to take on the role of both the attacker and the defender in the game.
Year 2 and 3 were very lucky to have an opportunity to work with Joey again from The Foundation of Light. This time we focussed on tennis and improving our ball skills. The children became more confident using a racket and a tennis ball to balance and bounce and they tried to pass the ball with their partner.
We have also worked improving our teamwork skills. As you can see in the pictures below, the children have done a great job at working together to make numbers, letters and solve problems.
Year 3 have had a great time playing 3 touch ball. Many took defending seriously and were so proud to not let others score a goal. Exploring the different balls was challenging, especially hockey! After improving each week, the children evaluated all the different balls and decided as a group which ball they wanted to use to play their final game. Surprisingly no group chose hockey or football!
The children have loved working as a team as part of their OAA topic. They have developed their abilities to plan and discuss tactics as a group before completing them. They have really enjoyed the team games we have played, as they are really competitive! Well done Year 3.
Year 4 have had a great time playing Zone Cricket. They have learned how to set up the pitch and make sure the batting team have zones to score points in. Some of them got very competitive trying to score points quickly! The children also really enjoyed perfecting batting and bowling skills, whilst taking turns fielding and intercepting the ball.
Year 4 also had the opportunity to work with Joey from The Foundation of Light. He helped them practise good ball skills, such as balancing, bouncing, throwing and catching with a tennis ball. When the children were confident they moved onto using the racket correctly, on their own and in teams. The children had to work hard to communicate with each other and I was so glad to see them enjoying the challenge of trying to hit the ball through a hoop!
Year 5 have been focussing on ball and racket control in tennis. They have worked really hard to move around while keeping control of the ball.
In Outdoor Adventure, the focus has been teamwork. The children really enjoyed the freedom to work together and find solutions to their given problems e.g. Only 4 feet on the floor when there are 3 people in the group. You can see some of their very imaginative solutions below.
What an amazing half term for PE in Year 6! The children learnt a dance called ‘Making the Grade.’ As part of the dance they learned a routine in which they had to use a prop and dance in unison. They also used actions to represent their emotions and built these in to perfect their routines. It looks like an amazing routine Year 6!
Year 6 also worked on their cricket skills. They improved their target skills when bowling at a wicket and improved their batting skills by learning how to hold the bat and step towards the ball.
Spring 2 – Remote Learning and return to school
Reception thoroughly enjoyed their PE lessons with Joey from the Foundation of Light. They practised their ball skills; throwing and catching, remembering to keep their eye on the ball. The children travelled in different directions pretending to be zoo animals or landing in different airports. As you can see from the photos, it looks like they’ve had great fun.
While learning at home, the children in Year 1 liked completing PE challenges such as: skittles, hit it to win it, scavenger hunts and footwork. Which game will you try?
At school, the children started to play Rollaball and OAA, which will continue for a while in the Summer term. The children started learning simple ball skills and developed their communication and confidence.
During Home Learning, the children in Year 2 and 3 participated in different games, followed the owl on Cosmic Yoga and created their own obstacle courses. You can join in with the owl too!
Back at school, the children did an amazing job learning a flamenco dance. They listened to music from a different culture and learnt some basic flamenco moves to create a Spanish dance. You can see some of their fantastic actions below.
As part of our Rio de Vida topic, Year 2 and 3 enjoyed playing football. They practised using the correct part of their foot to kick the ball properly, and in the right direction. The children ensured that they were passing the ball to their team mates and took part in a football game against each other. They tried to follow the rules and took penalties if someone handled the ball, which happened quiet a lot!
To finish our topic, the children competed in a mini Olympics. They took part in a range of races, including; relaying race, running race, skipping race, discus throwing and the hurdles. I think the photos show how hard the children were working.
You can see some of the exciting activities that Year 3 took part in during home learning. They included; cycling, sledging, stepping stones, shuffling on towels and blind fold orienteering.
After returning to school, the children enjoyed the topic, ‘skittles’. They liked working as a team and began to understand the importance of attackers as well as defenders. I can see some great defenders in the photos below. Great work Year 3!
In Year 4, they have been completing OAA activities and challenges. The children began to explore working as a team, improving communication skills and problem solving.
The children have also played hockey. They focused particularly on dribbling the ball and holding the hockey stick correctly. Here are some useful tips for the next time you play hockey.
Get Set 4 PE – Resource File forPush pass
Year 5 are very competitive and they relished playing games. They worked hard on being able to make themselves open to their team members in order for the ball to be passed. As a group, they worked on making space and deciding which tactics they could use without shouting for the ball. Also, they used a variety of passes in their games; chest pass, bounce pass and shoulder pass, which you can see in the photo.
The children have shown some impressive strength and determination to create counter balance and counter tension with a partner in gymnastics. You can see some super examples below. They were also able to mirror each other and create simple sequences using their knowledge of travelling, balance and counterbalance.
Year 6 loved working with Joey from the Foundation of Light. They have been learning basketball skills and working on controlling the ball through dribbling and passing. They have thought about how important it is to be tactical and block and steal the ball.
Tag Rugby has been a huge hit with Year 6 too. They have even taken part in extra PE session just so they can play it. They have understood the importance of the rules and developed skills in passing and defending.
Spring 1 – Remote Learning
During Home Learning, Reception have played lots of games with their families, they’ve been on bike rides and completed lots of walks. The children have played different games from Get Set 4 PE including Capture the Socks, Alphabet Walk and Hamster Wheel. They have also enjoyed doing lots of dancing. How have you kept active?
Year 1 have enjoyed a mix of Joe Wicks workouts, Just Dance videos and workout games on YouTube. You can try one too.
During Home Learning, Year 2 and 3 have tried to keep fit and healthy by taking part in different activities including; an alphabet walk, Joe Wicks, 5 minute challenges, Just Dance and Cosmic Yoga. You can see some of their great workouts below.
The children in Year 3 have participated in Joe Wicks, Just Dance, 10 minute shhttps://youtu.be/d3LPrhI0v-wake ups and a range of family activities. They tried to improve their fitness and recorded a base line of activities and then retested to identify any improvements.
Some of the children in Year 4 joined in with Joe Wicks for PE with Joe this half term and enjoyed keeping fit every week. As part of our remote PE sessions they have also completed a range of physical challenges which were home learning friendly.
Year 5 have completed PE three times a week. The children have engaged with PE with Joe, completing 3 x 20 min work outs. They have also taken part in a Zoom with Sunderland AFC and various Just Dance activities. You can try it too.
The children in Year 6 have taken part in active sessions with Joe Wicks and completed 5- minute challenges such as circuits of star jumps, burpees, press ups and squats. They have created their own competitive games for PE using objects in their home. Which challenge will you try?
Autumn 2
Our theme in PE this half term has been Dance and Gymnastics.
Reception children have looked at traditional tales. They have been giants, acted out Goldilocks and the Three Bears and The Three Little Pigs with the character’s voices and pretended to be Humpty Dumpty. The children enjoyed making large and small movements, balancing and moving around safely and using the equipment.
During dance in Year 1 they began by thinking about how different vehicles move. They practised these by moving around the hall and then getting into groups and putting them into a routine. Their routines included moving in different directions, speeds and levels. They involved single movements and moving in unison.
In gymnastics, the children started by making shapes on a mat. They then practised different types of rolls and jumps. The children got the benches out and got used to moving along them and jumping off them to start to create a sequence.
The children in Year 2 and 3 really enjoyed creating a Cat Dance. They watched videos and looked at some pictures of cats to get some inspiration for their dance. The children created some actions and movements to match each part of a cat’s day including; sleeping, waking up, stretching, cleaning, prowling, jumping and sitting. They listened to the changes in the music so that they knew when to move on to each action and worked with a partner to perfect each part of the dance.
In gymnastics the children worked on different ways of travelling, balancing, rolling and jumping. Ways of travelling included; crocodile, bunny, caterpillar, bear, crab and straight. The children balanced on their large body parts. They could pick from a pencil roll, an egg roll, a teddy bear roll or a forward roll. They practised different ways of jumping including; straight, star, tuck and scissor. Then they choose their favourite one and put it together to create a routine on the floor and on apparatus.
The children in Year 3 explored a range of clocks and movements associated with clocks. From this they worked in small groups to explore a range of different activities that are carried out throughout the day i.e. getting up, having breakfast, coming to school and leisure time. The children then practised different parts of the day in groups and combined them together to create a dance. The children had to work in unison as well as listening to different parts of a song. The children worked as a class at the beginning, chorus and end.
The children completed ‘Balancing Act’ as part of their gymnastics work. They explored a range of balances – some that they had created! From this the children practised standing, sitting, lying and support positions. The children then organised themselves into groups and began to explore their favourite gymnastic positions. The children then completed a sequence plan as a group and began to rehearse.
The children observed each other’s routines during dance and gymnastics. From this they became critical friends to support their peers to improve. The children listened to suggestions and acted upon them.
Year 4 have also been looking at different ways of creating a dance. They were able to create a Spy set phrase by thinking of movements associated with spies. Then, they moved on to creating a dance sequence based on the theme of Solids, Liquids and Gases. The children needed to make sure they created a set phrase for 16 counts. They worked in teams to plan their dance carefully and chose movements to represent each state of matter.
Also, Year 4 looked at different gymnastic skills this half term. The children practised shapes, balancing and different ways of travelling. They also mirrored their partner and their actions. They then worked together to create a short sequence with a shape, balance and travelling movement. Then they developed their straight, barrel and straddle rolls and their jumping movements, making quarter, half and full turns as they jumped.
During their PE sessions with The Foundation of Light, Year 5 have been doing athletics. The children have enjoyed completing different tasks linked to running at speed and for different reasons, they have looked at improving their throwing techniques for distance and accuracy and how to improve the distance of their jump. They also used their right to a voice (A.12) to decide on rules for various games and which would and wouldn’t work.
The second PE topic for this half term was Indian dance. The children have enjoyed creating their own dance to the song Jai Ho, which included specific Indian hand movements, counting the beats to ensure that they were in time with others, a group tableau and moving in and out of the dance.
In gymnastics this half term, Year 6 have improved their ability to do forward and straddle rolls and understand the importance of strong body tension. They show an understanding of counter balance and counter tension and can move in and out of balances, creating a sequence using a partner for support. They have been working on head and hand stands and know that squeezing core muscles will give strong body tension and stability.
Autumn 1
In Reception the children have had an introduction to PE and had fun as ‘hibernating hedgehogs’, ‘witches and wizards’, ‘pirates’ and ‘monsters’. The children learnt how to move safely and sensibly in a space, stopping with control and how to change direction to avoid others. They practised moving and balancing in different ways and at different speeds and had the opportunity to follow, copy and lead a partner. While practising skills of running, walking, jumping and rolling the children listened to and followed given instructions and made decisions on how to avoid others to stay safe. They also had the opportunity to practise using hoops and cones properly and safely.
Our theme in PE this half term has been Athletics and Fitness.
Year 1 enjoyed games and obstacle courses to master movements such as running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, coordination and agility.
We have also taken part in weekly PE sessions with Joey from The Foundation of Light. We focused on moving and developing our dodging skills by playing games such as Dodgeball and Stuck in the Mud.
The children in Year 2 and 3 took part in a range of warm up activities and games such as ‘beat the cone’, ‘rabbits and foxes’ and ‘cone relay’ to help to improve their sprinting action and we practised keeping our balance when running over obstacles in our obstacle race. The children also improved their agility and co-ordination skills and worked hard to develop techniques to help them jump and throw for distance or height.
Year 2 and 3 also liked their weekly sessions with Joey from the Foundation of Light. Each week had a different theme such as Mario Kart so that the children could improve their fundamental movement skills. We played games like ‘Stuck in the Mud’ and practised the children’s ball skills. The children have worked a lot on their moving and dodging skills.
Year 3 began by timing themselves completing a range of tasks. From this they improved their skills each week. They concentrated on speed, stamina, strength, coordination, balance and agility. The children encouraged each other to improve their fitness skills and work to their full potential. Even when they found it hard, they tried to keep going and were proud of their efforts. Each week they reflected on parts of the lesson that they found more difficult and tried to challenge these things at break time and at home.
Year 3 also enjoyed a range of warm up activities and games such as ‘car park’ and ‘catch me if you can’ to help to improve their sprinting technique and they practised handling, passing and running with a baton. They worked hard to develop fluency and rhythm when running over cones and mini hurdles and further developed our jumping technique in a range of approaches and take off positions during games of ‘jump the stream’ and ‘hop, step or jump’. The children then worked on jumping for height, remembering to land safely, and their throwing techniques practising using two handed push throws, chest pushes and pull throws.
Children in Year 4 tested and recorded their baseline fitness scores after completing a range of activities. The children worked to improve these scores by developing their sprinting technique, developing their strength by playing games like ‘catch me if you can’ and ‘beat the cone’ completing exercises such as squats, sit ups and push ups to improve their strength. They completed actions to develop their co-ordination and agility playing games like ‘swipe’, ‘partner catch’, ‘can’t catch me’ and ‘through the gate and competing in agility races. The children also developed their balance and stamina.
Year 4 have also focused particularly on developing their running, jumping and throwing techniques. They have worked hard on trying their best and not giving up, even when they found certain exercises difficult.
Year 5 learnt how to both jog and sprint – knowing the differences between the two and how our bodies are different after each. They also attempted to keep pace with another – this involved matching their partners speed and ensuring they started and stopped in the same place as their partner. They also tried to run as a group and have front runners to keep the pace. Also, they have looked at relay races and how the baton is passed between the groups.
Year 5 also tested and recorded their baseline fitness scores after completing a range of activities. They worked to improve these scores by developing their sprinting techniques and changing their pace, they developed their strength by playing games like ‘the number game’ and completing exercises such as burpees, squats, lunges, sit ups and push ups. They also worked hard to complete ‘plank’ and ‘waterfall’ challenges, sustaining them for as long as possible in competition. The children also developed their co-ordination by skipping in different ways, performed a range of actions in the ‘Mirror game’ to develop their agility and completed circuits to develop their stamina.
Year 6 have worked on agility, balance, co-ordination, speed and stamina. They have been changing their running techniques to run for longer periods of time and set a pace. They have developed skills in a circuit style fitness class with a focus on improving balance and developing stamina.
