Spring 1

In Early Years this term we have looked at symmetry of butterflies and used paint to complete painted butterflies. From this we discussed the new colours made when folding the paper over to create symmetrical wings. We completed 4 sketches of a butterfly based on ‘Austin’s Butterfly’ sequences lessons. We
have developed our art area to encourage creativity, imagination and completed models i.e. make something out of recycled materials then cover it with paint / paper and finally add finishing touches.

Year 2 explored sketching their own homes with attention to detail and straight lines. They explored different artists and sketched their own drawings based on the artist’s paintings.

In Year 3 the children have really enjoyed examining Greek vases. They used them as an historical source to find out more about life in Ancient Greece. The children enjoyed creating their own Greek vases in different ways including; pictures and sculpture.

In Year 4 we have looked at various different pictures of Vikings; we used them as a historical resource to find out what they wore and compared them to discuss how some Vikings look different to others. We then used our research to create our own Vikings. As part of our Anglo-Saxon day, we created pinch pots out of clay that Anglo Saxons would have made and used.

Year 5 children have sketched various Ancient Egyptian artefacts and hieroglyphic amulets, containing words/ phrases that mean something to them.

During Year 6 art sessions, we have looked at a range of posters and propaganda materials used during World War 2. We have held whole class debates about their effectiveness, styles and techniques used combining these in our own work.

Autumn 2

In Early Years this term the children have created a class ‘Remembrance’ display using the Over Head Projector to create a large soldier, circles for poppies, sketches of poppies as well as making medals. They had fun creating firework pictures by flicking paint onto a black background. They have decorated divas made from clay using paint, glitter and sequins. Additionally they have developed their use of the loose parts and created some fabulous work including Christmas trees.

Year 1 developed their painting skills to create some amazing aliens that could live on planet Earth linked to their Moon Zoom topic.

In Year 2 the children have looked at different sculptures and what they can be made out of. They looked at ice sculptures and how fragile they are. The children created snowman sculptures using clay.

In Year 3 we have continued to develop their observational drawing skills by drawing the food that the children bought at the shops. They loved creating their own clay sculptures of fruit.

Year 4 have explored the impact music can have on art work. They explored the work of Kandinsky and Klee and how music changed the way the artist painted.

During art sessions Year 6 have improved their art and design techniques. They have worked through the design process by researching ‘Day of the dead’ skulls, designing their own and choosing suitable materials to create their own skull. Once completed the children painted their finished product with beautiful patterns and bright colours.

Autumn 1

In Early Years this term we have created a class Elmer using a range of media. We have explored colour mixing and the importance of filling the space when colouring.
Year 1 have used natural materials to explore drawing and painting, including leaf printing.

Different shading techniques and how to add detail to drawings of minibeasts through giving each other support and advice has been the focus for Year 2 whilst Year 5 sketched their minibeasts in the style of Charles Darwin, focussing on adding tone and texture to drawings.
During their Predators topic the Year 3 children created a sketch of a bird of prey in flight.
