MFL at Cotsford
At Cotsford Primary School we believe that learning a new language is a way of liberating children and provides an opening to other cultures. It is our intent that through Spanish we will increase children’s respect and tolerance of different cultures and, through a high-quality languages programme, should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. Children are introduced to Spanish in EYFS, year 1 and 2 through games, songs and stories focusing on new vocabulary and cultural awareness. This enables the children to develop early language acquisition skills that facilitate their understanding of the patterns of language and how these differ from, or are similar to, English. In KS2, each class has a weekly Spanish lesson. The teaching should provide an appropriate balance of spoken and written language and should lay the foundations for further foreign language teaching at key stage 3.
Spanish lessons have been a firm favourite in Key Stage 1 because the children have thoroughly enjoyed playing games and singing songs to help them learn their numbers to 10, colours and greetings. Year 3 and 4 have spent this half term recapping on the alphabet and spelling words verbally. The Spanish accent was the trickiest part but perseverance was the key. They have had fun playing matching pairs and learning through song! They need to work on their listening skills, as their partners could not score points when spelling in Spanish.
Spanish is a firm favourite of the children in Year 5 and 6. They have worked hard to learn and use the Spanish alphabet. Their pronunciation is developing well and they have loved our Spanish role play where they have practised asking and answering questions.
What a fantastic half term in Year 1; they have had lots of fun developing their Spanish. The children have practised the vowel sound ‘e’ and developed their Spanish vocabulary through games and songs. They have also started to learn the colours in Spanish.
The children have really enjoyed Spanish this half term in Year 2/3 because it has also linked with their History topic of holidays. As you can see in the pictures below, they have been able to name different parts of a seaside resort, describe flags from around the world and practised buying and selling things that you would find at the seaside.
The children in Year 3 have excelled in Spanish this half term. Their knowledge, understanding and use of classroom instructions has been amazing! Their pronunciation is getting there and all children are willing to speak Spanish in the classroom.
Year 4 have been amazing in Spanish this half term! They have learnt, used and understood the classroom instructions given. They have learnt different hand actions to help them remember the vocabulary. Great work!
MFL is a very popular subject in Year 5, the children have loved learning classroom instructions in Spanish. They particularly enjoyed translating some of our day-to-day classroom instructions that we regularly use e.g., ‘uno, dos tres mírame’.
Year 6 have worked hard in Spanish to become more fluent. They have worked hard on their pronunciation of words and conversational skills.
Spring 2 – Remote Learning and return to school
What an exciting half term – In EYFS and Key Stage 1 the children have been learning key vocabulary including ‘si’ and ‘no’. In Year 2, the children thoroughly enjoyed learning the flamenco and did a fantastic job. They really channelled their inner dancer.
Key stage 2 children have loved spending time on our new unit ‘Los Numeros’ learning numbers upto 30 through matching activities, games and songs. The children have shown their passion for practical Spanish and oral application.
Spring 1 – Remote Learning
The children have done a fantastic job at continuing to learn Spanish this half term. In Year 1,the children have practised their numbers 1-10 and also 1-20. They have listened to stories in Spanish and also joined in with songs. The children also learned some new greetings.
Year 2 and 3 have practised the vocabulary associated with visiting a fruit shop. While they were at home, they watched videos and listened to songs so that they could role play visiting a shop and buying some fruit.
In Year 3 the children have been recapping on their numbers 1-10 as well as exploring colours whilst creating posters. They enjoyed using Purple Mash to improve their Spanish vocabulary. The children listened to songs and pronunciation videos to support their days of the week, months of the year and seasons in Spanish.
Year 4 have worked incredibly hard on practising their greetings. They began to learn how to ask ‘How are you?’ / ‘¿Qué tal?’ Some children practised their pronunciation of different responses and played games with a partner to help the phrases stick.
Year 5 have worked incredibly hard to be able to share how they feel in Spanish. They can match English to Spanish feelings, writing the correct feeling for the emoji shown and writing a conversation between two people. In addition to this, the children have looked at the numbers 0-15 and worked on the pronunciation and spelling of numbers.
In Year 6 have worked on the Spanish alphabet using songs. They have also been learning Unit 4 – How are you? They have learned to match Spanish phrases to English such as; I’m well – bein, how are you – Que-tel? And gracias – thank you. They have also recapped days of the week and months of the year.
Throughout this half term, the children in EYFS and Year 1 have continued to develop their Spanish vocabulary and have enjoyed playing games and learning songs. They have developed their confidence when speaking aloud in Spanish and are becoming much more confident answering questions with ‘Si’ and ‘No’. In Year 1, they have learned about some Spanish food, parts of everyday language and numbers 0-10.
Year 2/3 children have had lots of fun learning about colours and shapes. They designed a sports kit using the colours they have been learning and enjoyed playing some playground games from around the world.
The children have also listened to Spanish Christmas songs including Feliz Navidad and Noche de paz.
Year 3 children have been continuing to explore greetings and developing their confidence using them in conversation. They were introduced to simple sentence greetings and how to ask people their name and enjoyed holding a simple conversation with each other. They learnt the Spanish vocabulary related to Christmas and created a Spanish Christmas card for their friends.
Children have enjoyed exploring the unit ‘What is your name?’ in Year 4 . They practised conversational skills and saying greetings to each other in Spanish, such as ‘Hello! What is your name?’ ‘My name is…’
The children have also enjoyed looking at which countries in the world speak Spanish and practising the Spanish alphabet every lesson to make sure they use the correct sounds in speaking lessons.
The Year 5 children have investigated Spanish speaking countries, where they are in the world using an atlas and looked at Spanish cities in depth. The children have also consolidated their phonic and alphabet knowledge, to support their future learning.
Year 6 have been practising their Spanish skills and can now hold a simple conversation in Spanish. They can ask someone their name and share their own name and can say how they are feeling. They have practised writing a conversation and have enjoyed singing some songs in Spanish.
In Early Years this term the children have learnt to say ‘Hola’ by playing games with their friends.
Year 1 began by talking about Spain and where it is in the world. They looked at some simple words and compared pronunciation to English, by watching a short story in both languages.
Years 2 and 3 have started to explore Spanish by listening to songs and stories. The children have tried to join in with some repeated language and they have started to learn some Spanish words such as the colours.
Year 3 have been using Spanish greetings throughout the day. They have read the greetings and matched them with the English. They have rehearsed the alphabet several times per week by singing the alphabet song. They have enjoyed learning about Spanish culture including Spanish food and drink.
Children have enjoyed practising the Spanish alphabet in Year 4 each week and are becoming more confident with Spanish phonics. They have practised greetings and are focusing on confident expression in conversation. They created a poster displaying what they know about Spanish culture and included some Spanish greetings.
Year 5 children have learned how to greet others in Spanish and now have knowledge of some aspects of Spanish culture. They can say the alphabet and have a good foundation for Spanish phonics, understanding how the vowel sounds are different to English.
Year 6 have been learning a new range of vocabulary linked to greetings as well as learning about Spain and their culture. To do this they have used atlases and have researched Spain as a country. They have looked at Spanish speaking countries around the world and have used this information to create a poster about their culture.
